Problem with launching Unreal Engine 4 for educational game development
Hello Guys,
I’m trying to develop games with Unreal Engine 4. I recently purchased some online courses to learn how to use the engine. At first, everything worked well and I could open and move through the interface easily. However, one day I downloaded free mega scan assets to build a scene. The process was too demanding for my computer, causing it to freeze. Since then, every time I launch UE4, even simple navigation in the viewport causes it to crash. I uninstalled and reinstalled the engine in hopes it would function normally again, but no matter what I do, my PC still won’t run UE4 beyond about five minutes.
Here’s my current PC setup:

- Processor: Intel® Core i5-3450 CPU @ 3.10GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.1GHz
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) PC RAM (CMZ8GX3M1A1600C10)
- Graphics Card: Radeon RX 470 Graphics
- Power Supply: Corsair RM850w
- Hard Disk: WD 1 TB
- Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
I’m eager to run UE4 smoothly again, even with the mega scan assets. Could you help identify what might be causing the freezing? Also, if upgrading my PC could fix the issue, which components should I consider changing? My budget is around 800 USD. Looking forward to your advice.
Please note: I’ve experienced RAM problems in the past where the system would emit a 3-beep sound and then restart after cleaning the chips. This doesn’t happen often but does occur occasionally.
Disk cleaning and defragmentation for the HDD? RAM utilization? CPU and GPU temperatures? System malware check?
This appears to be more about hardware specifications than any system-related issues. It’s unlikely anyone would attempt such a task without ensuring their PC is functioning properly, and they should be able to do so. My initial thought was that the RAM and possibly the CPU were insufficient, though the GPU seems quite old. I looked up "Hardware requirements for running megascan assets in Unreal Engine 4" and found a relevant discussion that supports this idea.
Thank you for your response. I followed the recommendation to defragment the HDD. After doing so, running UE4 worked without crashes. However, when attempting to load a field with UE4 assets, it began freezing once again. The task manager displays 4.48 GB of RAM usage. The CPU temperature reached its maximum at 82°C, while the GPU stayed at 67°C. I have checked the system for malware and found none.
I found myself thinking about UE4 during the lockdown. I was aware my system was quite old, but upgrading wasn't possible at that time. Since I could play games like Arkham Series, Tomb Raider Series and Dragon Age Series smoothly, I thought my setup could handle the engine—indeed, I finished a course successfully. However, switching to the other course with mega scan assets marked the start of issues.
The CPU temperature is elevated, especially during intensive use of one UE4 instance.
I looked at the temperature during UE4 runtime. It usually stays around 75, but when working on UE4 it rises to 83.
