Problem with laptop power-off functionality.
Problem with laptop power-off functionality.
I've been facing a persistent problem with my laptop and was wondering if anyone could offer suggestions. At first, I owned a Lenovo A485. It would stop responding completely after being left idle for some time—no power button response at all. The only way to get it back on was to remove the battery or use a specific reset button on the bottom with a pin. Eventually, I decided to replace it. I purchased an HP Elitebook 855 G8 and transferred the Lenovo SSD to the new NVMe drive from the HP model. After upgrading to Windows 11 (using the "don't migrate drivers" option during installation), everything seems functional except for a minor sleep issue. When I power down or hibernate, it works perfectly. But if I use the regular "Sleep" mode or leave it idle, it behaves similarly to the Lenovo—sleeping, then pulsing the power LED as usual. Pressing the power button doesn't restore it. The only solution is holding the power button for 4-5 seconds to fully shut it off, then pressing it again, which then boots up cold. I've verified all drivers are current with the HP update tool and installed the latest AMD drivers, but nothing seems to resolve the sleep problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
It might have been, after copying many SSDs over the years without any problems. Perhaps it’s just an outlier... It looks like the power plans are now quite minimal, which could be connected to Modern Standby and newer Windows updates. I tend to avoid right away saying "reinstall Windows" since there usually is a solution for existing installations. This keeps me puzzled and frustrated whenever I try to boot up the laptop, which gets even worse when it freezes. Maybe the best move now is to swap in a spare SSD and install Windows again to test it out.
