Problem with HP Omen CPU overheating.
I’ve shared this story before… my HP Omen 30L has been swinging between warranty repairs for this problem. The CPU is a Ryzen 7-5800X TJ-Max, and AMD warns me not to let it run too hot all the time. During games it reaches 85°C or higher and shuts down. HP replaced the factory air cooler with a factory AIO, but the CPU fan didn’t increase to 80% or 100%. They swapped the motherboard and CPU cooler twice, then replaced the CPU itself. Now the fans are working properly, but I’m still dealing with high temperatures. HP says they designed the Omen 30L to run hot!? That’s strange. Every gamer knows high CPU temps are bad. My warranty is over now. This will be my last HP purchase. This whole experience really disappointed me. I’ve built PCs for almost 20 years and never seen CPU temps this high before. I bought a Noctua U9S air cooler to replace the AIO, saw a tutorial on YouTube. I’ll see how it turns out. Any HP Omen 30L owners in the Linus community? Any tips or advice you have?
I once had an HP with Windows 98 SE—it was one of the top machines I ever used. Later, I switched to a HP Pavilion with Windows 7 and had no problems there. This is the first time I’ve faced issues with HP.
Hey GLN0781. How did the new Noctua cooler work out? I'm assuming you had to reapply the thermal paste when you swapped it out too. There's also thermal paste on the inside of the Ryzen lid (IHS) that sits on the actual die. You'd have to de-lid your CPU to take a look at it.
It worked ok, it’s only an 92mm fan cooler, I think it would work a tad better if it was an 120mm fan cooler, I added a second Noctua fan to it for a PUSH PULL action. Also I went into advanced power management and force it to turn the CPU Boost off…. The CPU was Boosting to max GHz for no reason and staying there even when not needed, which resulted in the higher then normal temps. It started idling at temps near 75-80 just running MS Edge to check my emails, and I got temp warning a few times near 92-95 degrees and thermal throttling. 90 is the TDmax but now with the dual fan Noctua cooler and turning the cpu boost off my temps stay 25-35 degrees cooler, 45-55 at Windows idle, and 70-80 during gaming. Which AMD says is fine.
