Problem with HP laptop screen showing black on HP laptop
I own an HP Omen 2019 dc1xxx running Windows 10 Home. It features an Intel Core i7-9750H CPU with RTX 2070 Max-Q and 32GB RAM. I've been using it for a couple of years now. Recently, gaming has become unstable—when connected to my Asus VG279 monitor, everything freezes and goes black. The HDMI connection drops, causing both monitors to shut down completely. I can still hear audio through headphones and interact with the OS normally, but once the monitors turn off, nothing works until I manually restart the laptop by pressing the power button. The problem started after a few months of use; I've tried letting it sit idle and closing specific programs without resolving it. Sometimes I can play for hours without issues, but then the monitors cut out unexpectedly. Could anyone help identify what's causing this issue? Thanks in advance.
Several possibilities exist, but some are simpler to investigate than others. One straightforward thing to check is temperature. Typically, laptops are built with systems in mind, so a heat issue might point to something like dust accumulating. Cleaning could be beneficial—try it and see if the problem resolves. I also considered it could be heat and checked the MSI Afterburner, but once I tried testing it, the problem disappeared. It's been a few hours now with gaming and multitasking, which was what I first suspected. I did collect some data, though. During gaming, my CPU reached high temperatures while my GPU stayed around 60°C—that’s within what I expect. My CPU fluctuated between 70 and 90°C, which seems normal for a laptop. The peak temps were 100°C on the CPU and 86°C on the GPU. I don’t think this is the main issue, but I’ll probably clean out my laptop soon, as it’s been about 4 to 5 months.
