Problem with headset mic not functioning on version 20.10.
I'm experiencing some audio issues with popOS 20.10. I can hear through my headset, whether connected to the front panel or rear input, but the microphone isn't being recognized. Here are the details: CPU - Threadripper 3970x, Motherboard - Assus ROG Zenith II Extreme Alpha, GPU - Nvidia RTX A6000, Headset - Sennheiser Game Zero. I've tried pavucontrol and alsamixer; when running hdajackretask it only shows the Nvidia sound card. Checking the system logs reveals HDA-Intel in NVidia audio code. If I switch preferences in Audacity to USB Audio settings #1 or #2, the mic works on both front and back ports, but it still doesn't appear in pavucontrol. Is there an HD Audio driver for AMD that needs installation?
It doesn't seem necessary to have a driver installed. The headset appears identical to a standard USB device. It might be related to a pulseaudio problem, as Audacity relies on ALSA as its sound server. You can find more information in a relevant archlinux forum thread and explore general pulseaudio resources for further reading.
Thank you for sharing. It’s understandable to feel uncertain, especially if you’re unfamiliar with Linux troubleshooting. You’re not alone in this situation.
I found a solution for pulseaudio on archlinux. I had to instruct it to manually load the front and rear microphone inputs. The configuration didn't persist well, so I created a bash script that restarts pulseaudio on login, which resolved the issue with apps like discord.
