Over the last month, after I upgraded and rebuilt my setup, I’ve faced persistent problems with my games crashing unexpectedly, especially the (err_gfx_d3d) error in Grand Theft Auto V. I’ve explored every possible fix—scrolling through Reddit threads, tech forums, and watching tutorial videos. At first, I suspected the issue was linked to my 3050 graphics card and the Nvidia drivers. I attempted uninstalling the drivers via DDU, installing the latest ones from GeForce Experience, and even tried downloading or updating drivers from Nvidia’s site. I also experimented with older GPU driver versions, but nothing resolved the problem.

I then swapped my RTX 3050 for a nearly unused GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition. After removing the old drivers with DDU and installing the updated drivers for the 1080Ti, I installed GTA on a new Samsung 980 SSD. The game ran smoothly for about 20 to 30 minutes before crashing again with the same error.

I was frustrated and thought the issue might never be fixed. The “err_gfx_d3d” message had been a recurring problem for GTA. I tried reinstalling DirectX from the Microsoft site and reinstalling vcredist_x64 and x86, but still couldn’t resolve it.

These crashes occurred intermittently on my old motherboard—an ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING WIFI II—paired with my RYZEN 7 5600X CPU. Both were purchased in December 2022. The problem started about a month ago, affecting my games more frequently.

Recently, I saved enough money to buy a new motherboard and CPU at Best Buy, rebuilt my PC using the same GPU and PSU (Corsair CV550 W, 550W), and kept the same RAM. I also used identical drives.

I’ve also noticed that games on Steam, Epic Games, and Roblox have started crashing without clear reasons. For instance, Fortnite, Squad, Battle Bit, and Roblox would freeze after about 30 minutes to an hour of play. I’ve tried different monitors, HDMI/dp cables, and even reinstalled Windows 10 and 11 multiple times, but the steps I’ve already attempted haven’t worked.

I’m hoping someone can help me find a solution or at least share useful tips. Here’s a list of my PC components:

to see what issues might exist, visit userbenchmark.com and share the link to your result, for example:

Uncertain about other PC games, yet for GTA 5 the error is mainly due to compatibility problems between the graphics hardware and the supporting DirectX software on the system. Many users have managed to resolve this by changing the in-game DirectX API version to 10 or 10.1. Although GTA was promoted as a DirectX 11 title, it is also built to function with older DirectX versions. It’s not a problem at all to try. Have you increased your GPU or CPU speed by any means?

out of the box, i'm not sure, but it seems my ryzen 7 5800x likely has some optimization already applied.
