Hello, I purchased some G.skill memory modules, but one stick is missing its SMD component. This causes the PC to freeze on a DRAM error. Can you confirm whether it's a resistor or capacitor and provide its value? Also, would it be possible to just connect the pads instead of replacing it?

You can't simply connect the pads; you must determine the SMD and replace it with a new one directly.

Disappointing. It seems fixing it without a schematic won't be possible. I really don’t want to just replace the posts. If you had another identical kit, you might be able to copy the necessary components. It could make sense to look for memory chips on eBay for a cheaper alternative.

I possess another identical piece but it works too. If you can, see if it behaves like a resistor or a capacitor using a multimeter—it would be helpful.

I found this discussion through DuckDuckGo. I’m trying to help anyone else who sees this message. The images aren’t very sharp (matte-black PCBs are tough to discern), but it seems the missing part connects between pin 139 and 140. Based on various online datasheets, it looks like a MLCC capacitor is missing, and those two pins belong to the SPD circuitry. A picture of the working DIMM would confirm this. If you prefer fixing the memory yourself instead of sending it in, you’d need to remove the component from the good unit, check its capacitance and size, buy a replacement, and reattach everything. It’s doable—I’ve done it before on several DIMMs. Of course, if you have the right tools, you might already have done it! But either way, good luck!
