Problem with excessive CPU activity while online
Hi,
My PC has been working well since I bought it new in December 2020, with no hardware problems. But today when I started GTA 5—usually smooth at top settings—I was getting under 5 frames per second. I looked at my CPU usage, which was about 79% during the game. I own an AMD Ryzen 7 2700X with eight cores and a Radeon RX 5700 XT. I’ve tried less demanding titles like CarX Drift Racing and it’s similar, around 5 fps. When I turn off my WiFi adapter, the games run better and my CPU temperature drops. I’m playing these offline, but with WiFi connected my CPU usage stays low (50-60%) and it drops to 1% when disconnected. Anyone know what might be causing this? Sorry if I’m not familiar enough with PCs.
SOLUTION: I did a Windows update and checked the Task Manager for ‘wup.exe’ using 50% CPU power. A quick search on the web shows this is malware designed to mine Bitcoin. I removed it by opening its location and deleting all related files. I ran a scan with AVG to confirm it was gone.
Thanks!
