I've been facing a confusing problem with my modem since July. It keeps restarting unexpectedly, leading to internet interruptions. This only occurs when the PC is connected via Ethernet. Switching off the Ethernet port or unplugging the cable and reconnecting with Wi-Fi works fine. I've tried fixing it myself—checked online guides, even replaced the cable—but nothing changed. The ISP has suggested an upgrade since my old ZTE F612W (late 2018 model) is outdated. They plan to send a technician, but it hasn't happened yet. In the meantime, I'm hoping someone here can share similar experiences or clues about what might be wrong. Also, my PC runs Windows 11. Appreciate any advice!

When issues arise with your ISP gear, contact the provider and have them resolve it. Attempting repairs yourself could worsen the situation, which might lead the ISP to hold you accountable. It’s important to remember that this responsibility falls on the ISP, regardless of how slow they are in addressing problems. Back in 2018, I used an ONT from then and it performed its duties as expected. If you plan to increase your speed later, consider checking for an ONT upgrade option.

It seems I've encountered this problem before, though I'm not sure what exactly was done to resolve it. Maybe it involved an unmanaged switch placed after the router, but there could be other causes. Could software on my PC be generating excessive traffic that overloads the router? Have you tried using a different cable? Have you ensured the Ethernet drivers on Windows are up to date?

I installed Glasswire after doubting that software might be the issue, though nothing looked unusual. I purchased Cat6, Cat6A, Cat7, and Cat8 cables from UGREEN, assuming they were trustworthy. All cables behaved identically. I didn’t update my Ethernet drivers, so I’ll test this to check if it’s the cause.

Just verified, it looks like you have the newest Ethernet drivers.

Return the modem to the ISP, inform them about the overheating issue and request an exchange. Then proceed to install the new unit and test the Ethernet connection once more. We experienced a similar situation previously, so an exchange was necessary after a severe lightning storm passed through the area—though it wasn’t a complete failure, just enough to cause some issues. If you swap out the old model, you’ll be using a fresh, properly configured device that should display correct settings.

It was a tough fight with my poor ISP, but I finally got someone to bring in a technician for a new modem. Of course, the device itself was the real issue behind the troubles.
