I'm dealing with outdated hardware while making upgrades. My PC occasionally crashes and shows strange error codes after changing BIOS settings. It won't boot properly and displays flashing 90 and 99 messages. Changing the CMOS battery helped sometimes but not always. The only guaranteed fix I've found is running the computer without any external devices connected. I came across this workaround on another forum, but it doesn't explain why USB devices might be causing problems. I'm not too concerned about the boot issues now, just wondering why this method worked so well for me.

The most recent time you swapped the CMOS battery is unknown unless you’ve inspected it recently. If you can’t remember, consider checking with a battery tester or replacing it.

I haven’t swapped it before. I’m planning to give it a shot. I rarely kept a mobile device for more than a couple of years, so replacing it every five months seemed typical.

I owned my MSI Z97 Gaming 5 from 2015 to 2019, kept it in a box and left it unused for two years. When I tried to use the board for troubleshooting, the battery was dead, the BIOS was behaving oddly, and the system performance was poor. I checked the battery and found it low, so I swapped it out with a new one and everything worked fine.
