I just encountered a strange problem where I can easily switch my audio output between my headphones (Astro's A40 with W/ Mixamp) and my desk speakers (Realtek Audio) without any extra steps. Now, whenever I open an app like Discord or games with voice chat, I have to manually adjust the settings each time. Plus, changing the output to the bottom right also requires doing it again.

I’m wondering if there’s a specific reason for this change. I usually update my graphics card drivers regularly, which might be the only factor affecting how everything was set up before. I’ve also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the audio driver, changing default devices, but nothing seems to work. I’m trying to find all possible ways to reset everything back to its original state, even though I’ve already attempted that.

Thanks in advance!

Similar to a recent Windows update, the concept was that users wouldn't need to alter audio output constantly. For instance, using a headset for Discord and speakers for a web browser. However, I understand that when working with only one device at a time and preferring to switch outputs simultaneously for all applications, this might not be possible anymore.

Now, I'm unsure if it's still achievable within Windows, given my long-term use of a single small application for this purpose.

Fix: Soundswitch,

With Soundswitch, I can switch between my headset and speakers using the default hotkey (Ctrl + Alt + F11). You can adjust that hotkey as needed. It also supports recording devices—if you have more than one, like three—I can switch between them with a hotkey. Just remember to set the required devices in the Soundswitch settings if you want to use hotkeys for switching.

Yes, they lack an output configuration named "System Default."
