Good morning everyone, I'm dealing with an unusual problem on my 12GB EVGA RTX 3080. After adding a third monitor, my idle power consumption has jumped significantly compared to the previous two-monitor configuration. When all three are connected, the draw consistently reaches over 100 watts, but it drops sharply once the third monitor is removed. Additionally, the memory clock increases to 9500MHz with the third display, whereas it stays at 405MHz with just two monitors. This behavior occurs even during idle mode. Could anyone suggest possible causes or solutions? Is there an issue with the third display port output or something else? Thanks for your help!
It's a recognized problem with no resolution from my own investigations. Back then, I faced the same challenge, but now it's not happening. My GPU models were 2070S and 970, coinciding with when the issue started. The trigger involved using two displays—1080p60 and 1080p165—at 165Hz running at 120Hz. This configuration resolved the high idle power concern. My current setup uses a 3090 with four active displays: 1440p144, two 1080p60, and one 768p60. I didn't experience this issue before, nor did it occur with my 3080ti.
I had that issue as well with an EVGA 3080 FTW3 Ultra. It has to do with the power states. Apperently if the overall pixelclock is too high, it will stay in "P0". I solved it by lowering the refresh rate of the secondary monitors. I have my main Monitor running at 4k@120hz and the 2 monitors on either side at wqhd@100hz. If I go any higher with the refresh rate of the wqhd screens, the card does not go to any lower power state than "P0". At 100hz it goes to P8. There is a tool (I can not remember the name) to force the card to go into a lower power state, but in my case I got severe flickering on all monitors when I tried that. That issue has apparently existed since many years. I can not remember exactly since when, but I think I found forum threads from almost 10 years ago with the exact same problem. It's a huge pita but I can live with 100hz on the secondary monitors. I prefer it to having fan noise in idle...
