The main idea is clear. The name already gives a hint, but I was hoping to experiment with the new Quake II RTX Demo on my GTX 1070. Unfortunately, I can't take advantage of any RTX capabilities in my current Windows version (1803). I checked for updates and found none, which was a few weeks ago. I downloaded the manual update files from Windows' online service, including the Windows 10 update assistant, and started the installation. At that point, the system would restart several times, triggering a BSOD before it would roll back to my older 1803 setup due to problems. Now, I discovered that Windows 10 version 1903 should be available for everyone who clicks the "check for updates" option in their settings. Thinking it might finally work, I tried it and was told there were no updates left, still stuck on my original version. Could there be a compatibility issue or is my hardware outdated? I'm feeling confused. I attempted to clear my update files, hoping something might have been damaged, but that didn’t help. I’m seeking advice without wanting to revert to a clean install—my last clean install was about 2 to 2½ years ago. Here are my specs: ASROCK X79 Extreme 6/GB Intel i7-3820 @ 4.2 GHz, 16 GB G.Skill Ripjaws Z series @ 2133MHz, Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 Gaming, Intel 730 SSD 2TB, Seagate Barracuda 64MB/7200RPM.

I doubt your setup is too old. My X79-Deluxe machine took 1903 w/ no issue while my 2950X machine fails at stage 3. I plan on just doing a clean install in a couple of weeks. You may have to go that route as well. You could also try upgrading from an ISO: Here is a link to one from Microsoft. The link will die in 24hrs.

I've read about doing the upgrade from the ISO and from what I understand I wouldn't need to do a fresh install with that route? Do I run the risk of losing all my data if it fails? I've never actually done an in-place upgrade such as that.

Changes will simply revert if they encounter issues. Still, data loss remains a constant concern. A local update doesn’t replace thorough backups when things go wrong.

I understand everything you mentioned, but right now I’m too busy to reinstall anything. I really need a bigger external storage for backups. Currently I have 500GB, and my photo collection is around 1TB. Once I get a larger drive, I’ll perform a complete backup—so far I’ve saved the essentials, but not the things I want to keep like vacation pictures.

Uncertain if Quake II RTX delivers full value with a GTX. I recall @givingtnt ran it on an 1070, but it worked only at 800x600 resolution.

Hello! Yes, I've tried it on my 1070 and it's really impressive. Unless you were using minimal settings and low resolution, it wasn't playable. You might notice some light reflection effects, but nothing close to the demonstrations. Don't let anyone waste their time or risk their photos.

It seems like the effort wasn’t worth it, but fixing it turned into a challenge in itself. I ended up feeling stuck and determined to make it work, which shifted my mindset.
