Problem fixing RAM size from 6GB to 3.8GB
Problem fixing RAM size from 6GB to 3.8GB
Your system is actually 64-bit, yet the specs show only 3.8GB of RAM. This discrepancy might be due to how the memory is being reported or cached. Your CPU is an i7 920, and you have 6GB of RAM installed, which should be sufficient if the system is correctly configured. Double-check your system information for accuracy.
Your available VRAM is 2GB. You mentioned a total RAM of 5.8GB, with 2GB dedicated to VRAM. Feel free to share the output of the lspci command for more details.
so sorry for the late reply I thought i posted this on reddit. 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 5520/5500/X58 I/O Hub to ESI Port (rev 12) 00:03.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 5520/5500/X58 I/O Hub PCI Express Root Port 3 (rev 12) 00:10.0 PIC: Intel Corporation 7500/5520/5500/X58 Physical and Link Layer Registers Port 0 (rev 12) 00:10.1 PIC: Intel Corporation 7500/5520/5500/X58 Routing and Protocol Layer Registers Port 0 (rev 12) 00:11.0 PIC: Intel Corporation 7500/5520/5500 Physical and Link Layer Registers Port 1 (rev 12) 00:11.1 PIC: Intel Corporation 7500/5520/5500 Routing & Protocol Layer Register Port 1 (rev 12) 00:13.0 PIC: Intel Corporation 7500/5520/5500/X58 I/O Hub I/OxAPIC Interrupt Controller (rev 12) 00:14.0 PIC: Intel Corporation 7500/5520/5500/X58 I/O Hub System Management Registers (rev 12) 00:14.1 PIC: Intel Corporation 7500/5520/5500/X58 I/O Hub GPIO and Scratch Pad Registers (rev 12) 00:14.2 PIC: Intel Corporation 7500/5520/5500/X58 I/O Hub Control Status and RAS Registers (rev 12) 00:15.0 PIC: Intel Corporation 7500/5520/5500/X58 Trusted Execution Technology Registers (rev 12) 00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 00:1a.1 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB UHCI Controller #5 00:1a.2 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB UHCI Controller #6 00:1a.7 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #2 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) PCI Express Root Port 1 00:1c.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) PCI Express Port 2 00:1c.4 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) PCI Express Root Port 5 00:1c.5 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) PCI Express Root Port 6 00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 00:1d.1 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB UHCI Controller #2 00:1d.2 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 00:1d.7 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #1 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev 90) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801JIR (ICH10R) LPC Interface Controller 00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) 4 port SATA IDE Controller #1 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) SMBus Controller 00:1f.5 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) 2 port SATA IDE Controller #2 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. I'm not using a apu. for some reason, when i play on minecraft on windows i get like 150 fps with small stutter. on pop os I get under 120. sorry not related but wanted to add it if that relates to vram on something. yes to my knowledge my gpu is updated
Typically, with APUs and integrated graphics, some RAM might be allocated. In your situation, it shouldn’t cause trouble since you have a dedicated GPU. Are you sure Windows displays 6GB of RAM when playing Minecraft? I apologize for asking you to share command outputs, but I’m curious about the kernel version and the results of the command. Also, make sure your system is up to date and all drivers are installed. You might want to use Pop Shop for this. This should not occur normally, but if it does, it might point to hardware compatibility with your kernel version. Are you using any relatively new hardware? If so, consider a cutting-edge Linux kernel. Try booting from a Manjaro Live USB (they also provide Gnome if needed). You don’t need to install Manjaro; just run the command from a Live USB and let us know your findings. If it works, the problem was likely an older kernel version. While I’d like to suggest Ubuntu-based distros like Mint and Pop OS, many don’t work well with newer hardware due to outdated kernels. This boosts stability but can limit hardware support. Most advanced Linux users can upgrade the kernel and fix driver issues, though it requires effort. Changing distributions is simpler for beginners—just copy your home folder and install the necessary packages. First, we need to confirm whether the issue stems from an outdated Linux kernel before discussing solutions.
For the initial command it runs version 5.4.0-7629-generic with free command total used free shared buff/cache available. Memory usage is 4025528 2987920 125692 403188 911916 389164. Swap size is 4193784 2042896 2150888. I may consider switching to Manjaro, but my Wi-Fi was slow there even on Pop OS. I believe updating the drivers would be sufficient when I arrive.
