I recently wiped dust from my laptop, cleared the fans, and put it back together. Everything seemed normal until I played a game and it dropped to around 5 seconds at 70 frames per second, then fell to 3 frames for about 4 seconds before jumping again. Upon inspection, my CPU changed from 3.5GHz to 0.7-0.8GHz. I’m unsure if anything was harmed. Before cleaning, I used undervolting and games worked well, but after cleaning it’s much cooler—temperatures dropped from 70-90°C to 40-55°C. My Acer Nitro 5 has an Intel Core i7-8750H with two 8GB RAM modules at 2400MHz, GTX 1060 with 6GB VRAM.

I mentioned I just cleaned it, but some folks are suggesting it could be thermal paste. Since my laptop is only a year old, I’m not sure. Plus, I had overvoltage issues before cleaning, and the computer ran better afterward.
