Printer HP Deskjet 2050 - driver installation failed on Windows 10 PC
Good Morning Everyone,
I am operating a HP Deskjet 2050 with a Win 10 notebook (MSI GF 75 Thin). The printer was functioning smoothly until recently. It suddenly ceased printing, displaying the printer as offline in the queue. I attempted to reinstall the driver but it failed. When trying to connect via USB, the system registers the connection but reports a failure, seemingly indicating an issue with the USB link at the printer.
I tested multiple USB ports on the notebook and even connected through an OTG cable to my Xiaomei Redmi Note 8 phone using the HP print plugin, yet no connection was established. When connecting to another older Win 10 notebook, the printer worked without issues. I also tried it on a desktop PC (also Win 10) and it functioned properly.
This suggests the problem lies not with the printer itself, but possibly with my MSI notebook. For my smartphone, compatibility with Android might be the issue, so I’m not ruling that out entirely.
Could anyone help identify the cause? As I mentioned, I’ve tried various USB ports without success. I attached a screenshot to Google Drive:

I also used several different USB cables, but without any results.
Thank you and best regards,
Andreas
Check if the printer shows up in Device Manager and ensure "Show hidden devices" is selected. Also, look at "WIN" + "I" > Devices > Printers & scanners to confirm visibility.
Thank you for your reply. Yes, the printer is listed under "printers & scanners". But below it says "nicht verbunden" (not connected).
I observed another unusual issue today: I can no longer save PDFs. When I try to print and then select the printer, I don’t see any options, and I can’t install programs like pdfforge. It seems these problems might be linked.

I shared two images on Imgur: one showing the connection failure window, another displaying the error when installing pdfforge. I’m unsure how or why they’re related, but it looks like something changed on my PC that I can’t recreate.
On the Win 10 notebook, try using the built-in Windows troubleshooters. They might identify and resolve the issue.
On the Win 10 note book, check Reliability History and Event Viewer.
You should notice an error code, warning, or informational event right before or when the USB printer lost connection.
Do you have HP Smart installed? If yes, open the app and verify printer configuration settings.
https://download.pdfforge.org/
Examine any pdfforge end user settings closely. If nothing appears incorrect, remove pdfforge and reinstall it.
If the printer still displays an inability to connect, delete the driver files and install them again.
The event log shows no unusual activity. The entry indicates: the product was installed via Windows Installer. Product name: HP Deskjet 2050 J510 series - Basic software for the device. Version: 28.1.1328.0. Language code: 1031. Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard Co.. Installation status: successful (code 0).
Both laptop and printer are set up for German language use – correct?
Is HP Smart installed on the laptop? If yes, examine the Printer Settings "button".
Investigate and review as needed. Verify that all configuration options match expectations. Check every detail.
If not, consider removing the laptop's printer drivers together with any related HP tools.
Make sure you have a reliable working USB cable.
Download the printer drivers directly from HP’s website, reinstall them, and reconfigure.
See if the printer connects successfully.
In short, just try it out.
Thank you for your reply, it is very helpful.
The laptop is set up for the German language, and the printer I purchased in Brazil (a second-hand one) is also being used there.
I attempted to install HP Smart, but it failed. For instance, when I go to the Microsoft site and click "get," nothing happens. I also tried from other sources, but it redirects me to Microsoft without working. I don’t know why this is occurring.
I have already completely uninstalled the driver several times, then run ccleaner and spybot. However, whenever I try to reinstall the driver, it stops and shows an error when connecting the USB cable.
It's understandable you're considering a fresh installation to resolve the problem. I'm curious about what could have led to this situation. I recall using "Autoruns" the day before to disable certain programs during startup, but everything seemed fine and I followed the instructions carefully. There might be a link between that and the current issue.
Otherwise, the system is functioning smoothly with no errors, performance problems, crashes, or error logs. I plan to reinstall Windows at my convenience.
