Hi, I’m dealing with an old PC that had an i7 6700 running on an Asus Z170-A. It originally used two Corsair 8GB DDR4 modules at 3000MHz with XMP enabled. Everything worked fine before. The BIOS was the latest version (3802). Later, I upgraded to an i7 7700, hoping for a minor improvement. I swapped the CPU back to the 6700. But now it won’t boot when RAM exceeds 2455MHz (XMP settings make that tricky because the base clock is capped at 102.3% under XMP). I found this issue online – it seems the 7th-gen Intel CPUs struggle with 6th-gen chipsets on this board. I considered going back to the 6700 for better performance, but then the PC wouldn’t boot above 2133MHz (the JEDEC standard for DDR4). After resetting the BIOS and reconfiguring everything, as soon as RAM hits 2133, it fails to start. The DRAM LED stays lit even when it shouldn’t, and pressing "MemoryOK" still boots at 2133 but says memory is fine. I’m confused – why can’t I get back to the original setup? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, -a-

I attempted to replace the RAM with a Corsair 1x 16GB DDR4 2666MTPS module, but it still only achieves 2133MTPS. Any higher speeds cause the system to fail to boot.

These problems might be fixed by moving the CPU again. (I don’t understand the details)

You’re asking about what exactly happens when someone says "fail to boot." It could mean the system stays silent with no activity, displays a splash screen on the motherboard during startup, or always boots into BIOS regardless of input. If your message is accurate, you’ve likely already tested a working RAM module and still aren’t getting a response. Updating the motherboard’s BIOS might be necessary, especially if your chipset is outdated for the 7th generation. The Z170 chipset wouldn’t support the newer hardware by default, so a BIOS upgrade could resolve the issue. The suggested steps are a standard troubleshooting process to restore functionality.

Thank you for your response. The "DRAM LED" stays illuminated without turning off, which means the system continues running but doesn't respond properly (no POST beep). I confirmed using a different known working RAM module (Corsair 16GB DDR4-2666). The BIOS is version 3802. This version supports Intel 7th generation, and earlier versions also work with Intel 7th gen. As discussed, I'm facing more issues with the 6700 model (max RAM speed 2133) compared to the 7700 (max 2400). I've already followed all your suggested steps, thank you for the detailed walkthrough. The problem persists—once I raise the RAM speed after a successful boot at 2133, the PC fails to start again. Adjusting the RAM speed back to 2133 resolves the boot issue.
