It's likely you need to remain logged into your MS account while using the preview. It should always be connected to your login account, and staying signed in ensures you keep receiving pre-release codes. You shouldn't expect to get genuine free retail items from the preview.

You can decline the prerelease mentioned earlier (quote reference), and I appreciate having the MS account integration handy (useful for password recovery, quick access to apps, saving preferences).

Really, you could have warned me the day before I spent an hour swapping 10 with 8.1 to get ready for the update. Still, it’s good news—thanks for letting me know, even though I wasn’t expecting that announcement.

No, you won't lose your data when upgrading from Windows 7 SP1 to Windows Technical Preview.

However, just like all OS updates, make sure to back up your data if something goes wrong. Remember to remove your anti-virus and other security programs before beginning the upgrade, wait for a reboot, and avoid getting stuck in an error state where recovery becomes impossible.
