You can install Windows media creation software, save it to a USB drive, boot from there, and then update to a new version on the old drive. Just ensure you wipe all partitions from the tool, though it should still work automatically.

Also follow the advice from @Elijah Kamski, and always back up your files before proceeding. If you're using multiple drives, connect only the one you intend to use for Windows installation to prevent any issues.

Yes, you can skip wiping the drive if you're doing a clean install. You just replace the old OS with Windows 11 without leaving any remnants of the previous version.

You can proceed with that during installation. Simply remove all partitions and then install to the "unallocated space" as shown.

The drive is cleared randomly, depending on the stage of the process.

I think I need to figure out whether Home or Pro is better for me, and find the most affordable, trustworthy Windows key.

what version of 10 do you have now? your key for 10 will work for windows 11 as long as its the same version. if you do need to buy a key, go with which ever version is cheaper, there really isn't an advantage to pro vs home for the average user.

It needs to be divided and structured properly first. Reformatting a drive can cause a risky erase of existing data. If a partition exists and is suitable, it may be enlarged. There are different GPT and MBR issues to consider.

Pro handles certain tasks home can’t. For instance, BitLocker is one such feature. There’s another level above Pro named Enterprise that unlocks even more capabilities. If you don’t require those extras, there’s no point in purchasing a Pro key. Pro will manage everything home does, so opt for Pro if it’s cheaper. The same applies to Enterprise, though it will cost more.
