Hello, I've just upgraded my build with an RTX 4080 Suprim X by MSI. I'm trying to find ways to improve the rest of my system while keeping things quiet under normal use and comfortably reachable from my Seasonic Prime TX-850. Right now, I'm running an older 8700K at around 120W under heavy load with Kraken X63, which works fine. I hope a better cooler like the EK Nucleus AIO 360 lets me push the CPU a bit higher without overheating. The 250W+ chips such as the 13700K/13900K seem too much—even if I could manage cooling, it would stress the PSU and make its fans noisy. I'm considering three paths: upgrade to a power-hungry CPU and lower its voltage (undervolting + TDP cap), buy a 7950X3D which might run cooler by design, or opt for a lower-tier chip that stays cooler simply because it's less demanding. The benchmarks don’t show a big gap compared to the 13900K/7950X in most tasks, but I’m not sure about the heat output. There are rumors about things like thick IHS or V-Cache affecting cooling, but I’m still figuring out what that means for my setup. Driver updates have already boosted performance, so will future updates likely do too? If the 7950X3D isn’t worth it, what should I expect from tuning a 13900K or 7950X down, and what’s your best suggestion? Or is there a cheaper option that could handle ~150W efficiently? Thanks for your help!

The 7800x3d offers good power efficiency under less than 150 watts during gaming. Alternatively, the 7900 non X might be a better option.

For gaming, a 7800X3D offers solid performance. If you prioritize productivity, consider a 7900 or the less popular 7900X3D.

Other than intel, my i5 is constantly drawing 350 watts when under stress, and both an NHD15 and liquid metal cooling aren’t enough.

Intel is fine, but I suggest going with AMD Ryzen.

7800X3D appears to be a solid choice for gaming, though it trades some productivity needs for performance. Based on what I understand, it should perform similarly to 7900X3D and 7950X3D in terms of power use and heat output. While it’s much cheaper than the latter two, especially when considering RAM upgrades and expensive motherboard options, the jump from 7800X3D to 7950X3D isn’t as steep as it might seem. Maybe I’m overlooking something—like whether it lets you pair with budget boards. I’ll explore 7900X/3D chips more closely. After a really bad review of the 7900X3D by Gamers Nexus, I’ve moved on from those. What about the non-3D models with lower TDP? (like the 7950X in Eco mode)? I assume they might struggle against X3D variants in gaming tasks, but I’m okay with a few frames lost when my GPU isn’t top-tier. Thanks!

Choose the 7950X in eco mode or limit its output, then turn off the unused core for gaming. This offers the optimal balance you can achieve.

Apologies for the confusion. Are you referring to 7950X or 7950X3D? For 7950X, both CCDs have the same cache size.

That's correct, 7950X 3D is accurate.
