PPTP is outdated and lacks strong security. Many are seeking a VPN solution for your servers. Consider openVPN—it’s free.

PPTP provides no encryption at all. Consider L2TP, SSTP, or OpenVPN instead. OpenVPN is my preferred choice since I use it regularly—it's straightforward to configure. Users only need the OpenVPN client, a profile file, and a username/password pair. A certificate is not required.

What networking gear do you currently use? Avoid PPTP; it seems you likely don’t have enterprise-level devices either. Typically, a vendor-based SSL client such as AnyConnect (Cisco ASA) is common. You can deploy OpenVPN if you have extra VM space or resources. For 2 or fewer concurrent users, an OpenVPN access server should be the simplest to configure.

Thanks for the feedback, L2TP works well. Simple to configure on a 2012 server.
