Hello! I just changed the motherboard on my PC, upgrading from an old Intel system to a new AMD one. When everything was installed, it would light up and turn on but there would be no video. I removed the video card, tried again, and still had the same problem. After completely unplugging everything and reinserting it, I still don’t see any lights on the case or the motherboard. I have a working PSU, but nothing is working. Could my motherboard be faulty?
I also removed all hard drives and tried again, but got the same result—no lights at all.
I’m using a Gigabyte B450m DS3H, Nvidia 1650, 32 GB Trident RAM, Ryzen 7 5800x, and Corsair 750 e modular PSU. I think my motherboard might be dead, but I’m not sure. Any suggestions?
It seems this will likely be a BIOS update problem given the 450 chipset and 5xxx CPU. There might be a revision or BIOS sticker on the motherboard. You should probably look for the most affordable second-generation CPU available, such as an Athlon processor, update the BIOS, and then install the 5800X. It’s also best not to attempt overclocks with this configuration; XMP might work instead.
I mean I don't get anything. How can I even update the bios if I can't turn on the computer? That's my problem. Everything was turning on, so I thought it was a bios issue but wanted to double check and reseat. After reseating, I still get nothing—ram doesn't light up (it usually lights up when switching the psu on before even turning the PC on), no fans spinning, nothing at all, like it's just not working.
Consider upgrading to a more powerful mobile component. Verify the pins carefully before installation. There was residual thermal paste from the prior owner's device.
Hey! Take a strong "high proof" isopropyl and flush it out thoroughly. Gently clean the CPU, possibly using orange cleaner similar to Arcticlean (not a promotion) or something comparable first, then proceed with flushing. Even after this, you might need to update the BIOS. You could ask the previous owner if they remember what it was set to. F60 will be necessary for the 5800X.
Use a very gentle touch with the brush and allow sufficient time for the alcohol to dry completely. It might help to briefly use the blow drier even after you think it's dry. Please note, this should be done in a breadboarded setup, not connected to power, and the CMOS battery should be removed as well. Just CYA for both of us.
During our conversation, I left my computer with the CMOS battery off. Once I reconnected it, the RAM started working and remained active. That’s about it.
