You should consider using lightweight Linux distributions like LXDE or LXQt for your 5-year-old laptop. These provide a simple interface and are suitable for basic media server tasks. For a free option without sign-ups, you can explore Ubuntu Server with minimal packages or use a preconfigured media server setup. Let me know if you need help choosing the best fit!

You should retain Ubuntu due to the files and applications you've saved there.

I attempted to adhere to your directions, but it generated errors once Samba was configured. After installing Samba4, the issue persisted. Could you suggest alternative solutions?

In the end, my computer couldn't recognize the share, no matter how I tried. I believe your guide isn't very detailed compared to others. I've given up.

It might work if the laptop includes a NAS.
