Hello! I'm just starting out with Linux and have been using it daily for a few months now. I've encountered a problem that's getting a bit puzzling. Occasionally, especially during certain games like Stellaris, the screen will freeze completely and the fan stops working. Sometimes the fans actually reach full speed. The issue I'm facing is that it starts affecting other tasks too—like when I'm running multiple applications at once or using several Firefox windows.

I've got a few details: I have the XMP 2.0 profile set up, 3600 CL 16 Crucial Ballistics, PBO, and a moderate GPU overclock (2200, 1.25V). My machine is an AMD 5700G with an Asrock B550M-ITX/A motherboard. I'm confident in my hardware—running MemTest86, stress testing GTK, and GPU tests showed no problems.

I think the problem might be related to how Linux handles communication between applications, especially when it comes to games that aren't natively supported on Linux. It seems to happen more often in gaming environments. I'm open to being wrong and would really appreciate any advice or a guide on reinstalling Pop_OS if that's what you recommend. I'd love to avoid losing my important files from college.

Thanks for taking the time to read this! Have a great day!
Sincerely, BP

You can simply copy the files to an external USB drive and restore them during installation.

I wasn't expecting to consider this, and I doubt we have a USB drive big enough for all our files. Would it be possible to download everything to a hard drive, remove it, reinstall, and then achieve the same outcome?

Based on your words, it seems you want to proceed with reinstalling on another drive. Let me know if you'd like to continue.

Also, verify if any program is consuming excessive resources before restarting.

Did you try with XMP off or on a different setting? I could be wrong, but it could be that your system is overclocking far too much for what the hardware and OS can cope with. It may sound strange, but you'd be surprised by some quirks that at times turn up with the OS and some bios settings. Not sure XMP has been thoroughly tested outside of Windows. I'm also not sure System76 would have looked at APUs in a lot of detail for Pop_OS!. Pop_OS! is really designed for the hardware they sell as part of their PC builds and I'm not sure if they ever sold 3600mhz RAM. From the Thelio line-up build page ( https://system76.com/desktops/thelio-r1/configure ) they only offer 3200Mhz. So, I'm wondering if something may be getting pushed up or down too far by the XMP settings

This might be related to the GPU fan rather than the CPU. If the screen turns off abruptly while the fan stops or reaches maximum speed, it could indicate a GPU issue.
