Poor results with MSI GP66 processor.
I purchased this laptop a couple of months back and noticed it was slow from the start, even though its specs were high. I tried various fixes but nothing improved it. It’s the same model with an i7-11800H, RTX 3080 8GB, 16GB RAM, and I only added another M.2 drive. I was thinking about upgrading the RAM, but after considering it, I felt it wouldn’t help much and wouldn’t solve the performance issues.
I bought it from Amazon via this link: https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GP66-Leopard-...B09BP4K6B5
It runs Windows 11, updated from 10. I performed a full BIOS update, set performance to High/Extreme, adjusted the fan curve to prevent thermal throttling, and tested with and without Razer Game Booster. I also cleaned the system for unnecessary files.
The problem looks like this: in games such as PUBG, after a match I notice frame rates dropping from 200 to 80-90 and staying low. It’s still playable but noticeably affected. This happens in all my games, especially CSGO, where performance swings are common—sometimes smooth, sometimes around 330fps, other times between 100-240 FPS.
Any suggestions beyond resetting the laptop would be greatly appreciated.
Disable Windows 11 Virtualization Based Security and core isolation memory integrity if needed. Close Razer Game Booster during testing. Start ThrottleStop. https://www.techpowerup.com/download/tec...ottlestop/ Capture some main window screenshots, along with FIVR and TPL windows. If performance is low, open the Limit Reasons window and look for red boxes indicating throttling causes. In the Log File section on the main screen, play a game for 15 minutes to record any slowdowns. In the Options window, check the Nvidia box before logging data so results are captured. After testing, exit ThrottleStop to finalize the log file, which should be saved in your ThrottleStop / Logs folder. Include this log in your next post. A BIOS update might tighten power limits, affecting performance—consider reverting to an older BIOS if possible. Show me a log file if you’d like clarification.
You've checked the performance under various conditions and noticed some throttling behavior. It seems the CPU is being limited while the GPU runs smoothly. Even with maximum fan speeds, the CPU still throttles. You considered replacing the thermal paste, thinking dust buildup might be the cause, and observed some dust coming out in certain spots.
Achieving ideal cooling is essential for optimal performance from an 11800H. Certain thermal pastes may lose effectiveness within a couple of weeks when applied directly to a mobile CPU. If the paste replacement doesn’t help, consider using ThrottleStop to reduce turbo limits. This will lower peak performance, but maintaining stable operation may improve overall efficiency.
