Poor battery life on Ubuntu.
Poor battery life on Ubuntu.
I recently switched to Ubuntu 24.04 from 22.04 on an old Dell laptop (Latitude E6420). The device uses battery power even when suspended, which is consuming energy quickly. I looked into solutions and tried auto-cpufreq with a graphical interface, but it didn’t help much despite having its own power governors. I also disabled the gnomes power profiles. Previously, using Ubuntu Studio and Kali Linux on the same machine, I used TLP with PowerTop, but it didn’t resolve the issue. TLP seems to prevent Intel Turbo Boost, which was a key reason I avoided that method. Ubuntu 22.04 performed well in battery timing, but after updating to 24.04, the drain is now excessive. On this machine, I installed Ubuntu 22.04 twice—once with Etcher during good battery conditions and once with Rufus. This last installation caused an EFI not found error, which I fixed by updating the GRUB. It’s unclear whether removing auto-cpufreq would help; it took a lot of time to set everything up correctly. Please don’t suggest reinstalling the OS.
