In Steam: View -> Settings -> Downloads -> Steam Library Folders, create a folder on your external hard drive and add it to the library. When installing games, choose your external drive as the destination. You can transfer existing games by right-clicking them, going to Properties, selecting the "Local Files" tab, and clicking "Move Install Folder..." to assign your new Steam Library location. Note: The process may vary on a Mac.

It seems confusing why your system has such a large storage space. It should typically be less than 30 or 40 GB.
