Playing low-frequency games on R9 5900x system
Hi, while I was playing some BG3 and watching temperatures (I saw temps ranging between 65-75°C, with a spike around 75°C for a brief moment), I was also checking Ryzen Master. I noticed my clock speeds on all cores stayed around 4000MHz, occasionally spiking briefly to that level for a couple of seconds. This seemed unusual. I then ran Cinebench R23 and saw stable speeds of about 4500MHz (which is acceptable for me) and a max of 80°C. For the single-thread test, I got 4875MHz and 64°C, which is also within normal range. Is it typical for my CPU to not reach 4500MHz during gaming, or is there an issue? (I haven’t tested other games.) Here are my settings: PPT: 170W, TDC: 118A, EDC: 165A, Curves: -19 on all cores. My specs are: GPU – Asus TUF Gaming 3080 Ti OC, CPU – Ryzen 9 5900X, Mobo – ASUS TUF X570 Plus, RAM – Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200MHz (32GB), PSU – Corsair RMe 1000W, Cooler – Deepcool Ak620.
It makes sense to me. They don't push the frequency at peak levels or close to maximum capacity for that reason—it's just the theoretical limit. Under load, it will increase as much as possible, but rarely hits the absolute maximum because that's not its intended purpose.
That's the key distinction—games aren't just about a single thread benchmark. You didn’t bring up any performance problems either, which makes sense since the system seems to operate as intended.
