You're starting from scratch with virtual machines and Windows 10. It sounds like the VM isn't handling large amounts of RAM, which might limit performance. With your GTX 970 (4GB VRAM), you should be able to run games in a VM without issues, as long as the OS supports it.

I previously played 'Game Dev Tycoon' inside a Win7 virtual machine built on Debian. However, it seems tough to run demanding games in such environments. I also tried installing an SNES emulator on the same VM, and it worked without issues.
