Many rigs today lack optical drives, yet some games still need the CD/DVD to be in the drive for playback. What should I do?

We're referring to old games, aren't we?
You can always create an ISO/Disc image from them to mount on your PC. These files aren't usually linked to online services, so you can also use a native fix.
Or as others mentioned, an external USB disc drive would be a good option too.

When you require a CD or BluRay drive, there are numerous options available with sufficient space. I occasionally use a drive and prefer a smaller case, so I opt for an external one. Just choose a case that suits your needs.
