There isn't a built-in way to use a controller on PC for Smite, Steam insists it works only with keyboard and mouse. When using big picture mode it becomes even more dependent on those inputs. Smite is designed for Xbox, which explains the lack of controller support on PC.

Step one: insert the controller.
Step two: adjust settings to match the controller in Smite.
Step three: start playing.
