In fact, the back-end concerning graphics cards, video, and drivers in the kernel of Windows has been finalized for some time. Microsoft collaborates closely with Nvidia and AMD to develop drivers; this effort began after the Vista debacle. Nvidia has been particularly engaged in driver creation since Windows 7, improving significantly from the slow response during Vista's launch. They have faced numerous BSOD problems with the official Vista drivers for months following its release. Consequently, they are steering clear of this area. AMD tends to be slower, especially during beta phases, and has been even more so recently compared to earlier times.

I've been testing the tech preview since it launched on an R9 290 and haven't faced any problems. Played a variety of titles including Tomb Raider, company of heroes, Mafia 2, Brothers, Alien Isolation, Mass Effect series, Talos Principle, Witcher series, Walking Dead, and Wolfenstein: New Order. It's a solid collection and everything functioned smoothly so far—I think the operating system is ready for gaming. ?? The video demonstrating progress comes from an AMD 280x; they've been releasing some special drivers over Windows updates. The last update I saw was yesterday.
