Updating from Z170 to B450 requires moving your Windows 10 activation key. After installation, use the built-in activation tools or a trusted third-party service to transfer the key to the new product key.

Contact Microsoft to inform them about replacing a faulty motherboard. The customer provided the serial number instead of the product key, and they unlocked it via the provided link. If you have an OEM copy, that’s ideal; otherwise, entering the product key should complete the activation process.

I assume your Microsoft account will handle everything. I moved from Ivy Bridge to Skylake a few years back and just signed in with my Microsoft account on the updated machine. It's worth mentioning I own a digital license, not a tangible device. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help...are-change

If you possess the key (the string of numbers and letters), you can contact Windows support for assistance. Otherwise, a free Windows copy from upgrading from Windows 7 or 8/8.1 to Windows 10 is limited by the motherboard and cannot be transferred further as far as I understand.

According to the licensing agreement you accepted: With an OEM Windows license, the license cannot be transferred (which explains the lower price). With a retail Windows license, everything works smoothly. Simply install Windows 10 on your new device and turn it on. As long as you don’t restart the old system while connected online, you should be okay—until the old system is formatted.
