In roughly ten days the main server will cease operations. The game is available since 2003, and having played Planetside 2 since 2015, it’s become my favorite online experience so I was eager to revisit it. It’s quite unexpected how the visuals are lacking given that Halo 1 came out two years prior. I believe PS2 offers a much smoother experience compared to the PS1. Still, I understand why the original console holds sentimental value for older fans. DBG, the company that took over shortly after my membership started last year, has been handling the project well, which eases my concerns about its future. Instead of letting it fade, DayBreakGames continues to provide regular updates, giving me confidence this game will maintain its legacy and even surpass its predecessor.

It seems they likely stopped finding it worthwhile...

Likely not. The game has been available for free-to-play since 2014, and with PS2 demand rising and more PCs getting capable enough to run it, it’s unlikely anyone will want it anymore—especially not for nostalgia. Considering the end of PS1 and some major updates in recent months (like the construction system released last month), a fresh marketing push should definitely be considered after about five years.

The original planet location had been inactive for some time, with very few people on the last server and no direct download link available since dawn. It appeared they attempted to resell the game through a construction system. There seems to be a lack of rival titles in the mmofps category, making it hard to find similar experiences.

It's interesting you're taking this differently. Even with a two-year gap, Halo 1 was a straightforward linear shooter that didn't need to handle much change in what players could see or do. It's simpler to push visual limits in a game like that compared to one where many players battle on the same large map. Different genres have different expectations because they face varying hardware requirements.

That's a fair observation. The only reason I believe they're developing Planetside 3 is through optimization rather than new content. This game is roughly five years old, and the gradual improvement in CPU power hasn't been sufficient for it. I doubt the engine used was ever highly praised. It seems the choice to prioritize PS1's visuals over performance was made, but I find it hard to believe that would be the case for a later console like PS2. The current quality looks decent even on high settings, which makes me question my earlier comments about its appearance.
