asrock included a diagram in their manual to help users understand the PCIe setup. Here’s a simple breakdown of the PCIe configuration:

- The top X16 slot can hold 16 PCIe 5.0 lanes if the lower slot is free.
- If the lower slot is used, both slots get 8 lanes.
- The M.2_1 slot provides 4 dedicated PCIe 5.0 lanes from the CPU.
- Moving down, everything below is on a shared PCIe 4.0 x4 bus.
- M.2_2 gets 4 PCIe 4.0 lanes.
- M.2_3 and M.2_4 also share the same 4 lanes.
- Most USB ports and additional SATA slots are placed here as well.

For using your slots:
- Place your fastest SSD in M.2_1.
- Next, put your second fastest drive in M.2_2.
- The last two slots are equal; use them for less critical devices.
- Your GPU should go into the top X16 slot.
- For high-speed USB peripherals, prioritize USB4 (Type C) ports since they’re not shared.
- Two rear USB A ports are also non-shared; likely near USB-C connections.
- The remaining USB ports are generally available through the PCIe 4.0 bus.

Today I plan to follow that path. I’m not focused on the PCI chipset details except for the second M.2 slot. Here’s my imagined future setup: a Gen 5 GPU of unknown origin, second slot unused, m.2_1 with a Gen 5 primary drive, m.2_2 using an SN850x secondary drive, two mechanical SATA drives for storage, and nearly all USB-A devices connected via a hub or a USB-C converter. If accurate, this gives me a one-time upgrade to Gen 5 (GPU + M.2) while reducing the need to replace the AMD CPU. Just confirm the motherboard matches the same basic configuration—M.2 and x16 near the CPU—and proceed. Sounds good?

nowadays most boards use a single x16 lane slot or split them between two x16 slots, leaving the remaining lanes for high-speed peripherals and at least one direct-mount M.2 slot. the rest depends largely on the chipset available for that generation.

If the configuration matched Taichi's layout closely, your analysis holds. You could upgrade both M.2 drives and the GPU at full speed without taking up the second X16 slot. If the setup differed, you'd just need to recalculate. That sounds correct.

the arrangement around the PCIe ports remains unchanged since most suppliers now offer very similar configurations. however, the main task is reviewing the user guide—either examining the schematic if provided or understanding how lanes are assigned.
