Pillars of Eternity II Deadfire - stuttering in 2025
Hi
I’m trying to get back into this game, but the stuttering every few seconds stops me from playing smoothly. I’ve seen many discussions online about its performance issues, especially on powerful machines. I’ve tried all the usual fixes and updates, but nothing seems to help. I’ve tested both standard and obsidian versions, yet they still don’t work well. The system meets all requirements, and it’s not a hardware problem. The game runs poorly no matter how I set the graphics or resolution. I remember playing it after its 2018 release on a weaker PC, but I didn’t notice these issues then—I finished the game. Anyone have any suggestions to stop this annoying stuttering?
Spec: Ryzen 5600 RTX, 4070, Gigabyte B450 Gaming X, 32 DDR4 3600MHz, Kioxia Extceria M2 1TB, Fortis 3, PSU: SPC 550W Supremo M2. Windows 10 Home, Acer 27"1440p
Regarding PSU: PSU: SPC 550w Supremo M2 Age details – original, new, used, refurbished? Recorded heavy gaming usage – accurate? The PSU might be reaching or approaching its end-of-life stage and beginning to degrade, or it may simply struggle under peak power demands. Looking into the required wattage for the entire system. Note: Near the end of the review are several PSU calculators. Consider using two or three calculators to find the ideal PSU wattage for your setup. If any component lists a range, select the upper limit. Perform a manual calculation yourself. It’s safe to add 10-20% extra capacity just to have a buffer. (I usually overestimate.) Make sure the PSU has confirmed the necessary wattage for your build. A high-quality PSU is essential. Invest more if needed.
I purchased a new power supply around three years ago. However, this component or any other part of my computer isn’t causing any issues. The system can handle games like Alan Wake 2 and Cyberpunk smoothly, using up to 350W (verified with a wattmeter). The main issue appears in Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire, where many users report similar problems on more powerful machines. Numerous discussions exist online about players facing these challenges. Some also mention difficulties with Unity games, though no solutions have been found yet. It seems the problem typically occurs every 20 to 15 seconds, such as a slight drop in frames—like from 120 to 110—or a fps freeze, for example from 60 to 55, followed by another stutter. Even on the game’s launch day, performance was surprisingly low, indicating the issue lies with the game or engine itself.
Even though I understand you should never compromise on a psu, I also recognize that the psu isn’t related to your current issue. Come on!?!?! If a psu was problematic enough to cause stuttering in a 10-year-old game, you’d have far more problems. Have anyone tried limiting the frame rate, such as setting it to 60 fps? If the game doesn’t offer this feature, you can adjust it via the Nvidia control panel.
I also attempted to set the lock at 30 frames per second. Still no progress:/.
