Recently I faced issues running Windows updates because my C drive was completely full. This situation is quite unusual. An hour later I still don’t understand what’s happening. In WinDirStat I checked the "show free space" and "show unknown files" features and turned them both on. The results showed the drive as having a lot of DAT files, labeling only about 1Gb as such—no clue why. Also, the clutter appears in the root folder but isn’t visible in any way I’m used to. I can’t mark that space as empty, can’t delete these files since they seem to vanish, and can’t uninstall what appears to be a hidden program consuming space. This has never happened before, so any advice would be invaluable.

Which particular drive are we discussing? Have you checked the Crystal Disk Info tool? It can reveal if the drive is malfunctioning, possibly explaining the unusual behavior.

Both crystal disk utilities were successfully downloaded, returning clean or good results. The storage device is a Samsung SSD 960 EVO 250GB NVMe.

Currently, there appears to be even less available space than before. I've observed the remaining area shifting noticeably each day. I'm completely confused and would really appreciate any insights you might have!
