Recently I switched to gigabit fiber internet and upgraded my router to a custom-built PFense model using spare components. The problem is that while my hardware supports the connection, download speeds remain only about half to two-thirds of expected levels. I’m unsure what’s causing this drop and don’t have much experience with PFense settings. I suspect the fiber-to-RJ45 converter might be the culprit, though it could also impact uploads. Router specs: i5 4670K, 16GB RAM, two Intel NICs.

I’m checking how fast the connection is by using just one client and ensuring no other devices are connected. Turn off Wi-Fi and remove all other peripherals from the network.

You ran the speed test with those settings and got the same outcome. Turning off offloading and adjusting MTU didn’t improve your connection.

Try without PFSSL and observe the results. If you achieve full performance without it, it suggests the issue stems from your PFSSL configuration.

I ran the test using the original HomeHub3000 and got identical speeds, which makes me suspect the issue is with the bell itself. I’ll wait a few days to check if it gets fixed. Thanks for the assistance—I might post another question if problems persist.

It all ties together in a specific way. The fiber cable links directly to the PFSSL device. You can skip the ISP router and connect straight to your own setup. Your ISP, Sasktel, offers this feature starting from the ONT to your equipment. But once you're past the ONT, you're fully on your own—no further assistance from them. Their devices aren’t there, and any issues are yours to resolve.

There are several options to work around the homehub. 1) PPPoe passthrough 2) Media converter 3) sfp PCI-e card. I believe Bell resolved the problem at their end since I’m now getting full speeds again. Yay!

I’m receiving a portion of the promised 1 gigabit and part of the upload speed. I’m using a media converter with bell, and through PPPOE I’m connected. With the hub, the speeds match what they advertised. I’m unsure what’s happening. I’m connecting via PPPoE. ONT > Media Converter > pfSense (WAN) – the router seems sufficient. I’m aiming for gigabit speeds and would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!
