Hey, I’m checking if running PF-Sense on a Dell Vostro 3650 and an 8-port unmanaged gigabit switch is feasible. Is it recommended? And with the fiber connection coming soon, will it support gigabit speeds? Thanks ahead!

VLANS functionally works, but you'll also require a managed switch. USB internet is an alternative, though without USB 3 it will be sluggish and support is unreliable. In short, consider investing a little more in another system.

It’s what I already have and I can’t really spend more on anything else... Is a USB really worth it?

I won't use USB devices. Do you have a USB 3 model? Is your internet service provider included with a router?

It's a 3560, yes it supports USB 3. The ISP router is a D-Link DSL-G256DG; I think it's separate from the modem and includes a feature allowing ISP remote access to my network for troubleshooting (TR-069), which isn't ideal.

You’re looking for specific capabilities from pfsense. Once you confirm that, I’ll switch to something like an edgerouter. Also, you’ll need a Wi-Fi AP on the laptop, and there appear to be problems with USB NICs—please avoid those.

Usually avoiding my ISP's option... I guess I'll need to look for something smoother.
