It seems the situation is deteriorating. This morning I powered on the PC and... nothing happened. The fans started up but the screen stayed dark. It’s freezing before the system boots now. After waiting a while, I pressed the power button again to shut it down. When I restarted, I saw a BIOS recovery message. For now, I disabled XMP even though it worked perfectly for years. I’ll monitor the outcome but it could be a reason to replace the machine. Personally, I usually avoid new installations on main systems because of the hassle and cost. This isn’t just about expense—it’s also about avoiding troubleshooting. Normally I don’t do this on a primary system, which is why I’m hesitant. The current issue is serious since accessing the PC requires moving multiple monitors and equipment.
I’m considering whether this effort is worthwhile given the problems I’ve faced before, especially those linked to power supply units. The machine in question was purchased in 2017, making it almost six years old. I have a spare high-tier 850W unit that could be swapped if needed.
It seems quite unusual. It might actually be your motherboard. It could be that the power supply has failed, but it’s unlikely if you’re using a good quality PSU. If you have another one available, it’s worth trying to replace it just to confirm. In the worst case, you could plan a new build but still think it’s worth testing by disconnecting all drives except the boot drive and checking if the issue persists. Unless you have a compatible spare motherboard on hand...
In summary, possible points to note: The boot failure occurs only in the early morning after a night off. It functions properly after an immediate reboot or reset. No issues arise during a restart or when shutting down and then restarting. It appears temperature might play a role, especially with rising temperatures now compared to winter. A sudden surge during startup could be the cause, though sustained power is stable once running. I’m unsure if it can be consistently triggered, making troubleshooting difficult.
I made the change and switched to new power supplies. The Corsair HX1000i came out, and the NXT E850 was installed. I also unplugged a cable that was connected to the motherboard but not used elsewhere, and removed an unused USB cable between the PC and monitor. I plan to enable XMP again so the PSU replacement is the main focus. If the issue persists, I’ll revisit XMP later.
I only experienced the issue this morning, though I made a change yesterday. I connected a third monitor. Could this be the cause instead of the PSU? This is the model I previously used but swapped it out for a newer version that consumes less power and generates less heat. I don’t recall the exact time I did this. When I tried to resume streaming, I reinserted the old display and managed to post again this morning.
It just occurred once more. This case stands out because it doesn't match the earlier patterns. It's evening time. I've been operating the PC all day. My roommates suggested going out for food and drinks. I powered down the PC and left for roughly two hours. Returned, turned it back on, and... it froze at POST. Ctrl-alt-del works now. The monitor in the previous post isn't connected, which seems to eliminate most possibilities.
