Hey guys,

I brought home a gaming laptop about a week ago. It runs smoothly overall. However, during gameplay, the FPS stays high for just five minutes before dropping repeatedly for about twenty seconds. After that, it quickly returns to normal after a couple of minutes. The drops keep happening again and again.

I believe this is because the GPU usage fluctuates. When FPS decreases, the GPU usage also drops periodically. I’ve tried games like Assassin Creed Odyssey, Watch Dogs 2, Witcher 3, and others. The GPU would drop to around 40-50%, causing FPS to fall to 7 to 10. The CPU and GPU temperatures aren’t high, making it almost unplayable.

For online games such as Valorant and CS:GO, the issue still exists but the duration of drops is slightly longer.

Note: I’m unable to return it due to COVID-related problems in my area.

Laptop specs:
- Model: ASUS ROG ZHYPHERUS G
- GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti Max Q
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3750H
- RAM: 16 GB
- OS: Windows 10
- Storage: 1.5 TB SSD (plus 1 TB external)

Solutions I’ve tried so far:
1. Reinstall Windows
2. Update drivers
3. Rollback drivers
4. Adjust power management for gaming
5. Modify registry notes for gaming
6. Check background apps

I think I almost did everything... Guys, please help me... it’s a new laptop.

I think you might be slowing down due to heat.
Laptop coolers are often limited by size and weight.
When your processor overheats, it reduces speed until it cools slightly and the process restarts.
What options do you have?
Not much.
Make sure your cooling vents are unblocked.
A cooling pad might assist.
Try lowering the maximum CPU performance in Windows Power Management from 100% to 90%. This won’t affect games much and can lead to more stable performance.

it's a fresh lap too. i think it's not related to temperature since the average temp is around 67. i also observed that other laps had similar temperatures, and the cpu temps were normal. the fans are running well and spinning smoothly at high speeds.

How are you tracking temperatures?
Averages might not tell the whole story.
You might be operating at 100c, triggering the throttle and lowering performance, yet running at a lower temperature like 50c for some time.
The average could end up around 67c.
I’ve come across many problems with gaming laptops cooling.
Models with 3750h and 1660ti are no different.

Make sure your cooling airways are open. A cooling pad might be useful. Try lowering the maximum CPU performance in Windows Power Management to 90%. This won't affect games much and could lead to more stable performance.

while i unplugged the charger from the laptop, the lag stopped happening. however, the frame was still affected by low power. what's the issue?

The default settings for power management will lower both power and graphics performance when the device is on battery. This is intended to prolong battery life. You have the option to modify these settings as desired. My recommendation is to test running the device connected to a power source, aiming for around 90% power usage.

but the issue isn't fully resolved... games become unplayable when connected... i believe fps decreases while cpu usage drops to 10%, and gpu reaches 50%... do you have any suggestions?

Have you tested my 90% solution while connected?
Navigate to control panel/power options/change plan settings/balanced option/adjust advanced power settings/processor power management/expand to view maximum processor state/modify setting from 100% to 90%.
Share what occurs when it is plugged in.
