Performing overclocking together on a friend's machine
Recently I considered upgrading to a 1070, but I worry my i5 7400 might face a bottleneck and won't sync well with the GPU. I found out an overclocked 7400 could work. However, I have a b250 board that can't be overclocked, so I'm thinking of asking a friend with a z270 to help me overclock my CPU. Will it work? Thanks a lot. P.S. I'm not really a PC expert, sorry if I sound confused.
The process occurs on the motherboard, meaning you cannot only focus on the CPU and use a non-overclockable board.
You can achieve impressive results with a fast GPU and a slow CPU without major problems. However, the performance will still be limited. The main issue arises when the CPU is extremely slow, forcing the GPU to pause and wait for data. That’s not ideal. Below is the CPU hierarchy diagram. If you scroll down to the Legacy CPU section, you’ll notice the i5-7400 remains among the top gaming GPUs. If you had a Q9650, you’d need some overclocking.
