Performance suffers significantly at high resolutions
Hello, everyone. I recently got a 9800X3D and have run into some issues. I usually get smooth gameplay—above 100 FPS in titles like Ghost of Tsushima, FF7 Remake (not the new version), and Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales—with only a slight drop to around 80 FPS and a nice frame rate. However, the overall experience feels uneven. Sometimes when I switch cameras quickly, there are brief moments of choppiness that aren't reflected in the frame rate or counter. Before this, I experienced poor performance on Lost Judgment with low frame rates and some other issues when using Ray-Tracing On. Things improved after I adjusted the BIOS settings and turned off SMT and PBO, but it still feels a bit unstable.
Could anyone give me some advice? Thanks for your help, and sorry if this isn't the right forum for this topic. Also, I didn't realize I'm still seeing random spikes in FF7 Remake's frame rate, and I'm not using MSI Afterburner for monitoring—I'm using CapFrameX, but the problems persist even when it's off.
I was testing a different motherboard with an i9-13900K, but it failed and lost warranty coverage. On this board (Gigabyte B650M Gaming Wi-Fi), this is my initial CPU setup.
Check if drivers and GPU are up to date. Is RAM working at 6000Mhz? Have you adjusted graphics settings? What resolution are you using? Are you utilizing the full VRAM in these games? If you moved from an older PC to a new one with the same OS, issues can still arise even after installing drivers.
I performed a fresh installation of Windows 11. All drivers were updated via Gigabyte Control Center, steering clear of problematic programs such as Norton and Smart Backup. I conducted memory tests at the standard speed and with AMD Expo 1 activated, achieving a performance of 6.000 Mhz consistently. The results remained stable across both scenarios. The only pending task was updating the BIOS. I didn’t monitor VRAM consumption, though the GPU operated at 99-100% utilization. Previously, I ran those games on this GPU without significant problems. A clean Windows 11 install helped prevent further complications. In Ghost of Tsushima, switching graphics settings only caused minor issues; performance remained acceptable at 1440p, though it was somewhat choppy. All games ran at 1440p. Additionally, I overlooked mentioning that my temperatures stayed normal—typically they stay below 62ºC during gaming, and under 74ºC when CPU usage hits 100% for intensive tasks.
generally it's not advised to rely on manufacturer apps for updates. Consider a clean Windows installation followed by installing the necessary drivers yourself. These usually include: -chipset (website of the AMD or motherboard maker) - gpu (website of the GPU maker) - occasionally "wlan" drivers (website of the motherboard maker) - BIOS (website of the motherboard maker)
I support this idea. I usually get AMD Adrenalin installer from the AMD site and Nvidia drivers via their Experience app. I’d like to see temperature data beyond just CPU or GPU, including all system temps. If possible, could you download HWINFO64, run it during gaming, and capture advanced CPU, GPU, and motherboard temperatures? Here’s the official link: https://www.hwinfo.com/download/
