I switched MCE from disabled to auto and set Windows to high perf mode. After that, the CPU increased to 5GHz. When I tested Cinebench, my scores improved but temperatures rose significantly. Each core reached at least the high 60s during the test, with some hitting mid-70s. In my timespy results, my score actually fell despite the boost. I’m unsure if temperature was the issue or possible throttling. Max temperatures stayed below 70°C. It’s strange because before the Windows reinstall I thought MCE was off and it still reached 5GHz, but maybe that wasn’t the case. My temps were much lower before, even at 5GHz. This 9900k is definitely tricky. I’m leaning toward keeping MCE disabled and sticking with around 4.7GHz, especially since gaming is my main reason for buying it. I’ll try it in Battlefield 1 to compare performance and temperatures, and see how it feels. Is MCE really just a way of saying overclocking, or is it more about how these processors handle boost?

MCE usually applies more voltage than needed. The optimal approach is to keep it off and clock your cores manually. You can adjust individual cores (Core 0 is typically the strongest) or set them all at once. This lets you raise some cores higher without increasing voltages much. For instance, cores 0 and 1 could run at 5GHz, 2 and 3 at 4.8GHz, others at 4.6GHz, allowing around 1.360V or less (with some variation). A 70°C rise isn’t huge. The goal is to stay as low as possible; I cap daily heavy work at 85°C. I don’t like high temperatures beyond that, but it’s manageable. Experiment manually—Intel seems more suited for this method.

My interest in clock speeds began after noticing sluggish performance in Battlefield 1. I double-checked to confirm VSync wasn’t active, which matched the feeling. FPS dropped slightly compared to my previous 4790k. It was confusing, so I started testing, reinstalling Windows, and troubleshooting. You’re correct about the boost. In HDMonitor, all clocks were fixed at 4.7GHz. Before reinstalling, I saw 5GHz in AI Suite, but after, it never exceeded 4.7. It might be optimized to 4.7GHz per core now thanks to updated drivers instead of fluctuating between cores. My Cinebench and Timespy scores are still low, possibly because I’m reviewing older CPUs before they were grouped together. EDIT: The CPU behaves oddly—even at idle every core stays at 4.7GHz.
