Performance lags in FPS due to system limitations
Hey everyone, welcome! I’m still getting familiar with this stuff, so any advice would be really helpful. My PC setup is: CPU - AMD FX-6100, GPU - RX 460 2GB, Power supply - GIGATECH 550W, RAM - 8GB DDR3 at 1600MHz, HDD - 250GB Seagate MOBO, SSD - ASRock 960GM-GS3 FX (AM4 socket). Recently I upgraded to an RX 460 2GB and noticed some performance drops when opening files, browsing, or playing games. I thought maybe the MSI Afterburner was the issue. The CPU ran at around 70% under load, GPU between 30-50%, especially during games like CS:GO, H1Z1, League, etc. I checked the drivers and reinstalled them but nothing changed.
Then I tried an older AMD Radeon HD 7770 (1GB) which worked until it failed, likely due to overheating. Eventually, I figured it was a bottleneck and decided to upgrade the CPU. At that point, I could play H1Z1 with low settings without too many problems, but later started experiencing crashes—sometimes for 2-3 seconds saying the GPU settings were back. Temperatures stayed normal (CPU max 50°C, GPU max 60°C). RAM passed Memtest86 tests, and the hard drive showed no errors in SeaTools.
After that, games would take longer to load, sometimes needing 4-5 minutes for H1Z1. I noticed Windows would run CHKDSK after a restart, and there were occasional green and purple screen colors. I ran MalwareBytes and found 12 threats, including a few viruses like RiskWare.IFEOHijack. I removed them and restarted, which helped a bit—FPS improved slightly, but then dropped again.
I also heard some vibrations and clicking from the case. After opening it, I checked the PSU and saw it was probably cheap and noisy. The noise seemed to come mostly from the power supply unit, possibly due to its age. It sometimes spiked every 3-4 seconds, but stopped when under load. I also noticed FPS drops when the CPU clock dropped around 200MHz or memory clock changed.
I’m not sure what’s causing all these issues, but thanks for your help!
Goodbye to your old HDD, it’s getting corrupted—you’ll need a brand-new drive. Malwarebytes might not have caught everything, so a fresh installation is best unless you have top-notch backup data. You should also consider replacing the power supply unit before it fails completely or causes a fire. The HDD could be why your frame rate drops and your CPU is acting up.
It’s possible the virus affected other files you can’t access or locate; if they’re corrupted, they might need to be removed. Updating the operating system could offer some relief, but it won’t fix everything on its own. Your CPU issues are serious—consider replacing it as well.
Reinstalling the operating system wouldn't fix the issue since the hard drive is the main problem. This causes issues with games like H1Z1, such as loading problems and screen distortions, along with CHKDSK errors. If you swap out the HDD but still face these symptoms, your RAM might be faulty, possibly due to a failing power supply unit. I'd really be hesitant to turn on my PC because of the PSU concerns.
I'll mention PSU first since a failed power supply could totally damage your PC. If your HDD stops working, it won't ruin the rest of your system.
