Performance issues with HDR
Performance issues with HDR
Hi Guys
I’m looking for some feedback on whether others have experienced similar problems. I recently discovered performance issues when playing games in HDR, but it doesn’t seem to be related to HDR itself—it might be connected to my desktop resolution and what appears to be a Windows bug. My experience is that I lose around 30% of my performance during gameplay. To cope, I’ve tried running a lightweight program like HWinfo, enabling HDR while the game runs, then switching back to HWinfo and using alt+tab to return to the game.
In Assassin’s Creed Origins, I noticed a 33% improvement in performance. I’ve also seen a 10% boost with Metro Exodus. It seems my desktop resolution needs to match the in-game resolution for this workaround to work. The same setting but without trying it doesn’t yield the same results, so I’m not sure if this is the main issue. Anyone else facing similar challenges?
Just because a monitor claims to support HDR doesn't guarantee real improvement, right? There are cases like HDR 400 and HDR 1000 where the actual performance falls short, and many so-called "HDR" displays don't even reach those levels. It's often just marketing fluff.
Pascal's performance dropped by around 10% when HDR was active, but I've never seen it hit 30%.
I understand what HDR is and the tools that support it. My question here is about possible issues, not whether to disable the feature. I appreciate your time.
That's unfortunate, it's surprising since I disable HDR without any performance issues. HDR is widely used and shown, but the 30% seems too much and there might be another factor involved. I'm not sure what's causing it.
It differs depending on the game. Your Nvidia GPU is likely the cause, and the performance drop varies across titles. The reason isn't clear. A driver update might help or not, depending on how much time they've had to resolve this problem and whether they've included it in recent updates. I saw a new driver update yesterday, so you could try updating your current one and rerun your tests.
The KS9000 in SDR mode performance is almost identical to that with HDR enabled, so unless you're using the TV in full daylight with the brightness maxed there really is no point to using HDR on that screen.
You should really do some more critical thinking before just enabling every feature you hear about on the internet.
The display's brightness output accounts for half of the HDR equation, with the other half related to color rendering. While I think having both high peak brightness and good color precision is ideal, I still find myself experiencing color banding in games, particularly during intense color mixing effects like smoke or transparency. It would be great if such issues could be eliminated, as they are hard to ignore. If HDR removal eliminates them, that would definitely improve the visual experience.
