Performance issues in laggy games on Dell G3 devices
I received a Dell G3 after watching a tutorial from Linus. The specifications include an Intel i5 8300H at 3.9 GHz, 8GB DDR4 RAM, GTX 1050 graphics, 4 GB of 1 TB storage, and a hard drive. The problem occurs when playing games like GTA V—FPS drops significantly, causing the game to become unplayable or crashing in lobbies. It doesn’t happen with Fortnite. I’ve searched YouTube for fixes but nothing resolved the issue. I’ve reinstalled the game and Windows several times, updated drivers, and even ran stress tests on Intel XTU, but the temperatures stayed around 81 degrees after applying thermal paste. I also removed and reinstalled display drivers without success.
Single channel RAM or a slow HDD (5400rpm) might cause problems in open world games where new level data is read frequently. The frame rate may drop when you move to a smaller area in GTA but stabilize if you stay in one spot. A fresh Windows 10 install and drivers are free to test. If the issue is RAM or HDD, you might need an extra 8 GB DDR4 stick for dual channel or a faster SSD to speed up data loading. This problem seems more common in large open world games.
