Performance issue with RAM disk in GTA V Memory bottleneck affecting game speed
I just set up a 70GB RAM disk (10GB for Windows) to speed up GTA Online loading. I moved GTA5 from the C drive to the RAM disk after uninstalling and reinstalling it. Loading from the SSD takes about 3 minutes 15 seconds, while the RAM disk loads in around 3 minutes 19 seconds—very close. The Rockstar Social Club loads instantly from the RAM disk, and both CPU and GPU hit full usage with Paging off and on. I’m looking for any tips to identify what’s slowing things down.
What processor are you using? GTA: V is a challenging, large-scale game.
First off, are you testing loading the actual game to the main menu, or loading directly into an online session? Loading to the menu, you should see some difference. Unless some random authentication crap with their servers is bottlenecking stuff. To benchmark GTA V load times into game, you have to load into the single player campaign. Loading into online sessions you have to deal with all the apparently very poor matchmaking from Rockstar. Which is most likely what you're dealing with.
It runs smoothly with the same speed as someone using 200Mb/s. I also tested it on both an SSD and an HDD, which are 3TB green drives.
