Performance issue caused by CPU limitations alongside GPU usage.
Hello, I have an Intel i5 6500 with an AMD RX580 GPU, 16GB DDR4 RAM at 2133MHz. I notice around an 8% bottleneck when running games at 1080p resolution with medium to high settings. Titles like GTA5 RP, CS:GO, Rust, Ark, and COD Warzone often cause FPS drops, stutters, and inconsistent performance. In GTA5, the CPU seems to be fully loaded while the GPU drops significantly—from 100% to around 40%, then spikes again. Based on what I see, my system appears to be better than your friend’s setup, but I still experience lower FPS in those games. I’ve checked that my hardware is roughly ten times stronger, yet I’m getting much less than the 20-30 FPS you mentioned. Upgrading to an Intel i7 could reduce bottlenecking to under 2%, but my motherboard supports only 6th and 7th gen processors. It’s hard to decide right now—would it be worth spending more on a GPU upgrade, or should I focus on a full hardware refresh later? Thanks for your help.
Most used i7 models appear around $150, which isn’t particularly affordable. If you’re planning an upgrade, consider a motherboard with a price tag over $10,400. The processor your friend has might be outdated, unless it’s an older i5 like 4690 or 4670—even then the difference wouldn’t be huge. Have you looked for background processes using CPU resources? Are there any programs that consume a lot of memory or processing power? With so many available options and additional software for peripherals, it’s possible some could be draining your CPU. Also, do you play games at similar settings to yours (resolution, quality)? Not quite—your GPU is likely twice as fast in ideal conditions and only about half in worst cases. RAM speed helps, but it usually doesn’t impact frame rate much. CPU performance probably isn’t a major factor here.
