In certain situations the 5900 seems to outperform, GN has shared opinions about both, and it looks genuine. Generally the 5950 is better but there are exceptions.

It seems you were discussing single-core performance. The 5900X would likely offer a faster boost due to its higher all-core speed, given its larger power budget per core. If both processors aim for around 100W, the 5950X uses about 6.25W per core, while the 5900X uses roughly 8.33W across 12 cores. The 5900X provides more power to each individual core. The 5950X uses better-binned silicon, which contributes slightly but isn't enough to close the gap.

It still performs well in multithreaded tasks thanks to the additional 4 cores. The 5950x clock speed reaching up to 5GHz is likely a standard feature, not boosted overdrive.
